What Happens to an EV Battery After It Reaches End of Life

Explore this content with AI:

An EV battery loses capacity gradually over time, but that doesn’t mean it becomes useless overnight. Even after it can no longer meet an electric vehicle’s performance demands, the battery may still be repaired, repurposed, reused for energy storage, or recycled.

India is expected to see more EV batteries reach this stage in the coming years. EV penetration reached about 8.5% of vehicle registrations in FY2025-26, up from 7.7% the previous year, with registrations past 25 lakh units, according to JMK Research.

So what happens when an EV battery expires? This guide explains battery degradation, replacement, second-life applications, and recycling while highlighting areas where Indian data remains limited.

TL;DR

  • EV batteries lose capacity gradually over time, and heat and frequent fast charging can speed up that degradation.
  • Battery “expiry” usually happens through a slow decline in performance rather than a sudden failure.
  • People can repair, replace, repurpose for energy storage, or recycle aging batteries.
  • India’s Battery Management Rules require producers to collect and recycle EV batteries.
  • Second-life battery use is promising but still early in India.
  • Publicly available data on real-world battery life in Indian conditions remains limited, and replacement costs vary widely by vehicle model.

Understanding EV Battery Lifespan

Battery degradation refers to the gradual loss of a battery’s ability to store energy. Heat, charging patterns, battery chemistry, and usage conditions all influence how quickly this process occurs.

Battery University notes that battery aging also increases internal resistance and can affect cell balance, so charge rates must be managed accordingly.

Geotab’s analysis of more than 22,700 EVs found an average battery degradation of 2.3% per year and projected that batteries would retain around 81.6% of their original capacity after eight years. Vehicles operating in hot conditions degraded 0.4% faster each year.

Typical EV battery life in Indian conditions:

A 2025 IIT Guwahati simulation study found that Delhi and Churu climates caused higher degradation than Kolkata’s milder conditions. Use Geotab’s figures as a reference point and your own battery health report as the real measure for your vehicle. Your maker’s warranty and lifespan documents explain what they cover, so read them early.

What Happens When Battery Capacity Drops?

Reduced Driving Range Is Often the First Sign

Battery University says capacity fade mainly reduces driving range while power delivery stays strong.

According to WRI India, batteries that have lost 20% to 30% of their original capacity may no longer be suitable for primary EV use. However, the remaining 70% to 80% capacity can still be used for repurposing, refurbishment, or remanufacturing applications.

Common signs of EV battery degradation include

  • Reduced driving range on a full charge
  • More frequent charging requirements
  • Noticeable reductions in usable battery capacity

Impact on Charging Performance

As an EV battery ages, changes in internal resistance and cell balance may affect charging speed. In some cases, charging can slow, particularly as battery management systems work to protect aging cells.

This can be a normal part of battery aging, but an authorized service center should assess significant changes.

Can an EV Battery Be Repaired or Replaced?

Always have battery servicing and repairs handled through the manufacturer’s authorized service network. Depending on the vehicle design, manufacturers may replace individual modules, repair components, or replace the entire battery pack.

Note: Never open, repair, or modify a battery pack or BMS yourself.

Cost Considerations

The cost of EV battery replacement in India depends on the battery size, chemistry, vehicle model, and manufacturer policies.

One market example gives a sense of scale. In July 2022, an owner reported receiving a quote of ₹7 lakh for a Tata Nexon EV battery pack, according to RushLane. Tata had not published an official replacement price at the time, and the report described the case as unusual, so it is best to read it as one owner’s experience.

Battery pricing has changed considerably since then. BloombergNEF reported that average lithium-ion battery pack prices fell to $108 per kWh, down 8% from 2024.

This figure reflects the global market, and prices in India can differ. For any EV battery replacement cost, the most reliable number is a written quote from your dealer or an authorized service center.

Second Life of EV Batteries

WRI India (July 2025) says batteries with 70% to 80% capacity can serve mobile, semi-stationary, and stationary storage. The US EPA adds that reuse and repurposing are still being developed. EV battery second life is real, and it is early.

Energy storage applications

A 2026 TERI policy brief estimates repurposing potential of about 0.9 to 1.4 TWh by 2050. Stakeholders expect a 30% to 50% price advantage over new batteries, but collection, diagnostics, BMS replacement, certification, and insurance can erode it. TERI calls retired packs “conditional energy assets” and wants an independent state-of-health assessment and certification of the whole system. India currently lacks specific standards for second-life batteries, according to WRI. Lohum, an Indian company, said in a June 2023 interview that it planned a 5 kWh off-grid storage system from used batteries. That is a company claim.

Renewable energy integration

TERI’s priority applications include residential rooftop solar with storage, feeder-level storage under PM-KUSUM, and peak shifting at charging stations or bus depots. These are policy proposals. Pilots report inverter compatibility issues, voltage spikes, and a lack of OEM communication protocols. Falling new battery prices could narrow the cost advantage, as both TERI and WRI note.

EV Battery Recycling in India

Recovering valuable battery materials

A September 2026 CSEP paper projects that copper will be the largest recovered share by quantity and lithium the largest by value. It adds that recycling could supply about 10% of lithium demand for EV battery manufacturing in FY2026-27 to FY2030-31. Two-wheelers account for about 57% of the recoverable mineral quantity in that projection.

Emerging battery recycling ecosystem

India’s Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 place the responsibility for used EV batteries on the producers. Producers register on an online portal and must meet set targets. For EV batteries, the recovery target is 70% for 2024-25, 80% for 2025-26, and 90% from 2026-27, measured by dry weight. Recycled content starts at a 5% minimum in 2027-28 and rises to 20% from 2030-31. The rules also set a minimum collection rate of 70% of the EV batteries that producers place on the market. Users, in turn, must hand over a waste battery to a collector, refurbisher, or recycler. An IEA summary adds that producers cannot send collected batteries to landfills or incineration.

So, do old EV batteries end up in landfills? The rules rule it out for collected batteries. The system around them is still taking shape, though. The CSEP paper says the collection system for spent EV batteries is still fragmented and that India has not yet notified any battery circularity standards. It also says the rules have no recovery targets for individual minerals. Meanwhile, private players are building capacity. In 2023, Lohum, India’s largest producer of sustainable critical minerals and advanced materials, said its Reclaim facility could recycle about 2 GWh a year and recover 95% of raw materials. That figure is a company claim.

How EV Owners Can Extend Battery Life

Geotab’s data points to two levers: heat and heavy DC fast-charging use. Park in shade where you can. Use DC fast charging only when traveling long distances; otherwise, use slower charging. Follow your manufacturer’s charge-limit guidance, because it varies by chemistry.

For more detail, read our overcharge guide, which explains how the BMS manages the top of the charge.

Slower charging is easiest when a charger is close to where you park. A charger at home or in your society makes it an everyday routine, so DC fast chargers stay for the days you travel. A charger also includes safety protections for the power supply, which work alongside your vehicle’s BMS. If you are comparing options, our EV charger buying checklist lists what to look at before you buy.

Final Thoughts

An EV battery does not suddenly become unusable when it reaches the end of its automotive life. Capacity declines slowly, and many batteries go on to serve in energy-storage applications before eventually being recycled.

India’s battery collection and recycling ecosystem is still being built, but clear regulatory frameworks are already in place. EV owners should monitor battery health, understand warranty coverage, and follow manufacturer guidance to maximize battery lifespan.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does an EV battery usually last?

Real-world fleet data suggests most EV batteries keep most of their capacity for many years: Geotab projects 81.6% of original capacity after eight years. Electric Autonomy notes: the researcher said more years of data are needed. Indian measured data is thin.

Can an old EV battery be recycled?

Yes, an old EV battery can be recycled, and the EPA says most lithium-ion battery components can be recycled. In India, the Battery Waste Management Rules 2022 set recovery targets of 90% from 2026 to 2027 and require users to hand waste batteries to a collector, refurbisher, or recycler. Take any removed battery to your authorized service center.

How long does an EV battery last?

The answer depends on heat, charging habits, usage, and chemistry. Geotab found that hot conditions added 0.4 percentage points of annual degradation, and a heavy, high-power DC fast-charging group averaged 3.0% per year, compared with 1.5% for a low-use group.

How to check EV battery health?

Ask your authorized service center for a battery health report, because the BMS only estimates the state of health, and service centers run battery health tests. An HDFC ERGO blog says service centers offer tests and that reports can include state of health and cycle count.
